Owen Hatherley presents film screening and lecture in Belfast

Architecture, urbanism and politics writer Owen Hatherley visits Belfast on Sun 22nd and Mon 23rd January for a film screening at QFT and a free lecture at the University of Ulster.

Owen will introduce and discuss Patrick Keiller’s experimental documentary The Dilapidated Dwelling, showing at Queen’s Film Theatre, Sun 22 Jan, at 3.30pm. The cost is £6.20 (£5.70 online) / £5 unwaged / £4 full-time students & children.

He will also give a lecture entitled A New Kind of Bleak , at the Conor Lecture Theatre in the University of Ulster’s Belfast Campus on Mon 23 Jan at 1 pm. All are welcome to the lecture, free admission.

New Videos in NBS TV

A number of new videos have been added to NBS TV this month.

  • BIM opportunities
  • Designing the Aquatic Centre roof
  • Retrofit – meeting 2050 carbon targets

Login the University Portal to ensure access to these videos, as you need to follow the instructions to set up a profile with NBS before the videos can be watched. If you require any help, please contact your Subject Librarians for advice.

New RICS Survey Results Available in isurv

If you are looking for the latest statistics and trends for your assignments and dissertations, you might find something of interest in isurv.  A number of new survey results have been released by RICS and are now available for download in the database isurv.

Among the new releases are:

  • Rural Land Marketing Survey
  • Residential Lettings Survey
  • Global Distressed Property Monitor
  • Global Commercial Property Survey
  • Construction Market Survey

The results are divided up into each Quarter for 2011. Login via the University Portal to get the username and password required to access isurv.

Researched Availability

The research team has been expanded to actively track and verify available properties across the UK, ensuring that data is accurate and up-to-date. With powerful new EGi Geo-Smart Technology, you can quickly find available properties matching your requirements.

The new availability features include:

  • UK-wide available properties for sale or to let.
  • Simple, precise property search with EGi Geo-Smart Technology.
  • Draw your search area on our interactive map and refine results with fast filters.
  • Download availability schedules to Word or availability reports to Excel.

With this update the separate London Offices and UK Cities availability searches have been incorporated  into the “Availability NEW!” section, enabling you to find any property across the UK in a single search.

Building Reports for all sectors

Following the successful launch of office building reports, you can now search and download reports for all sectors including retail, industrial and leisure.

With the latest update you can download retail shopping centre building reports, which includes data for each unit, and developments made up of multiple buildings, for example industrial & retail parks. Developments with multiple buildings include a scheme summary and the ability to download individual reports from within the scheme or the full set of building reports from within the scheme.

Built Environment Induction Quiz Winner

2011 Library Induction Prize Winner

The winner of the School of the Built Environment Library Induction Quiz was presented with her award last week. Congratulations go to Meghan McCormack, a first year student on the MSci Property and Planning Development course in the University of Ulster. Her correct answers were selected from hundreds of answer sheets submitted by students who attended the Library and IT induction sessions in the first week of semester. Meghan is shown in the picture above receiving her prize from the sponsor of the quiz, Diana Fitzsimons, Director of the Belfast Office of Turley Associates. Thanks go to Turley Associates for their kind offer to sponsor the prize draw. Building Law Reports Online – Update

Please be aware that if you are using the Building Law Reports the username has changed this week. Details can be checked by logging into the University Portal and looking at the password information link. Please also note that only one user at a time can use this resource.

JCT 2011 Contracts Now Available in Construction Information Service

The JCT Contracts have recently been amended, and the new 2011 suite of contracts is available in full text in the database Construction Information Service. The new contracts, published by Sweet and Maxwell,  are available alongside the 2005 contracts. If you need any help finding them, please get in touch with you subject librarians.

IPD Academic Services Now Available

Access to IPD Academic Services has once again been restored. Users can now avail of the many useful statistics and data sets that IPD provide to students. Please be aware that there is a new address for accessing this service, and that it also requires a different password from before. Details can be found by logging into the University Portal and navigating to the Learning Resources Tab, and looking under the Library Databases A-Z list under the I section. Apologies for the break in service, which was something beyond our control.

NBS Learning Channels Becomes NBS TV

NBS TV is the new name for what used to be called NBS Learning Channels. It is an online video resource servicing built environment professionals. NBS TV covers a broad range of programmes, including case studies, technical guidance and interviews with leading industry figures. It covers four main subject areas:

  • Architecture
  • Civil Engineering
  • Planning
  • Surveying

To get access to this very useful service, you need to contact your Built Environment Subject Librarians for further information. The service, which used to operate using the Athens Access Authentication System, now has a new way to login.
