Localaw UK Update

Monday, November 26th, 2012

Localaw UK, the legal research service designed to suit the needs of those working in the local government sector, is no longer being updated in its present format. It will be shut down at the end of November 2012. Joanne wrote a blog post about the resources in Localaw moving to Westlaw in the Library Blog for Researchers in September. Unfortunately we will not be subscribing to this service in Westlaw.

The good news is that many of the Localaw resources can be found elsewhere. We still subscribe to the Encyclopedia of Planning Law and Practice in paper format, and you can find it in Jordanstown at 346.42045/ENC. Lexis Library has a very useful section called Encyclopedia of Forms and Precedents which can be found in the ‘My Bookshelf’ area on the front page. It has volumes on:

  • Health and Safety at Work
  • Highways
  • Housing
  • Landlord and Tenant
  • Local Government and Rating
  • Town and Counry Planning

and much more besides. It is updated monthly.

In addition, you will find other interesting sources of information in Lexis Library. If you have any queries about Localaw or Lexis, please do not hesitate to contact me.

To add a footnote to this post, from the end of November 2012, the Localaw UK service has been terminated.

Sustainability Bibliography from the NBS

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

The NBS (National Building Specification), part of RIBA Enterprises, have recently published a Sustainability Bibliography which is available in full text in the database Construction Information Service. The publication is a collection of documents relating to sustainability and arranged by subject, with links to the full text documents where available online. At 593 pages long, the Bibliography is a significant publication. The subject areas are divided into two main sections. The first section consists of traditional construction-related topics, such as planning, building (materials and services), and civil engineering, and the second section goes into more detail with particular topics such as renewable energy, lighting, and fire safety. Log in to the CIS database and search for sustainability bibliography to download this document.

It is a useful resource for Housing, Property, Planning, Transport and Environmental Health courses, as well as having a module on Local Government. Covering legislation, case law and guidance relating to these diverse but interconnected areas, Localaw is about to become much easier to use.

Some of the new features of Localaw will include:

  • A breadcrumb trail so you can track your exact position within Localaw UK and how you got there
  • The ability to restrict your search results to cases, statutes or statutory instruments
  • More intuitive search results which include document titles and snippets that show the result in context
