Estimating Price Books – Now Online!

We have just acquired BCIS Estimating Price Books online.  The online service offers up-to-date, accurate prices on all aspects of construction and civil engineering. Interactive and searchable, you can build your own schedules for materials, labour and plant costs. The following titles are available:

  • BCIS Alterations & Refurbishment Estimating Prices
  • BCIS Building Maintenance Estimating Prices
  • BCIS Civil Engineering Estimating Prices
  • BCIS Major Works Estimating Prices
  • BCIS Minor Works Estimating Prices
  • BCIS Painting and Decorating Estimating Prices
  • BCIS SMM7 Major Works Estimating Prices
  • BCIS SMM7 Minor Works Estimating Prices
  • RICS Schedule of Basic Plant Charges

The Price Books, formerly known as Wessex Price Books, are available on-campus only and require a username and password. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with  your librarians if you require help with these titles.

BCIS Online – New Interface and Functionality

BCIS have recently moved to a new platform for their online products. Our subscriptions to BCIS Online and BCIS Building Running Costs Online changed to the new interface today. It is quite different from the old interface so you might like to acquaint yourself with the different layout and new features. While many of the core functions remain, some new features have been introduced,  including the ability to rebase different index series to a common base and new graphs showing percentage changes over time. The html download has also been replaced with the more useful PDF format.

Please note that both of these products are available on-campus only.

NBS Learning Channels Becomes NBS TV

NBS TV is the new name for what used to be called NBS Learning Channels. It is an online video resource servicing built environment professionals. NBS TV covers a broad range of programmes, including case studies, technical guidance and interviews with leading industry figures. It covers four main subject areas:

  • Architecture
  • Civil Engineering
  • Planning
  • Surveying

To get access to this very useful service, you need to contact your Built Environment Subject Librarians for further information. The service, which used to operate using the Athens Access Authentication System, now has a new way to login.

RICS Red Book – 7th edition now Available in isurv

An advance copy of the 7th edition of the RICS Valuation standards is now available in RICS isurv. This new edition of the Red Book marks its issue for the first time in Global, UK and India volumes, and incorporates a number of changes and updates to enhance its clarity and ease of use.

CIB Website for Construction Students

The CIB – the International Council for Research and innovation in Building and Construction, publish hundreds of useful papers every year from their conferences. Many of these conference proceedings are available from their website. Although we have a number of their conference proceedings on our Library shelves, most of the more up-to-date publications can be searched for in the CIB Databases section of their website, with links to the full text papers. This resource will prove to be invaluable for the many construction students who are looking for material for their dissertations.

iLaw Construction Resources

Construction Information Service – Useful New Documents

Construction Information ServiceThe Construction Information Service database is a vital resource for all the subjects in the School of the Built Environment. The database, with thousands of documents covering construction, civil and structural engineering, building services, planning, transport and housing amongst others, is updated regularly with new documents. The documents range from British Standards, research reports and text books from hundreds of different publishers, legislation, and articles from the Architect’s Journal. The latest update includes the following useful publications:

  • UK Transport Policy – update (2008-2010) (TRL)
  • Transport information and the Internet – update (2007-2010) (TRL)
  • A short guide to consumer rights in construction contracts (RIBA)
  • Beach management manual (CIRIA)
  • Automatic fire detection and alarm systems (BRE)
